The ethnic composition.
The core of the Kirghiz people in Kyrgyzstan are - the people belonging to the Turkic group. In 1989 their number amounted to 2248 thousand people, or 52.4% of the total population, and in June 1998 - 2737 thousand people, or 58.6%. Kirghiz residing throughout stranyi prevalent in most rural areas. The number and proportion of Russian in the same period decreased from 923 thousand (21.5%) to 786 thousand (17.1%). Most live in the Russian cities. Increased number of Uzbeks (from 554 thousand to 644 thousand people), concentrated mainly in the Osh region. Among other ethnic groups with a significant number (30 to 100 thousand people), should mention Ukrainians, Germans, Tatars, Kazakhs, Dungan, Uighurs and Tajiks. Among left the country after 1991, most were Russian, and representatives of other Slavic peoples.
