The inhabitants engaged in agriculture, handicrafts, trade, animal husbandry and carrying. After the death of the great Russian traveler Przhevalsky, who died in Karakol in 1888, the town was named Przhevalsk.
In the early 90s of the 20th century. the city returns the original historical name of Karakol. The sights of Karakol is a memorial complex to the grave of the Russian traveler, explorer of Central Asia and NMPrzhevalsky monument, located 12 km from the city, on the high shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. Attraction of the city is a city park with unique paths of the Tien-Shan spruces, founded a medical officer and an active philanthropist N.M.Barsovym in 1895 as monuments to this day preserved in the town of Karakol Dungan mosque, built of wood in 1912 , and a wooden Orthodox church of the last quarter of the 19th century.
